Cataract Extraction with Intraocular Lens Implantation

Cataract surgery is the removal of the natural lens inside the eye, that has become cloudy or thick. An artificial intraocular lens is implanted to restore transparency and improve vision. This surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. Dr. Sponsel most often performs phacoemulsification or "phaco". This method involves using an ultrasonic instrument to break the cataract into tiny pieces. A small probe is then used to "vacuum" out the fragments. The artificial lens is then implanted through a small incision.

Cataract surgery usually causes little or no discomfort, with a 90 % plus success rate in restoring useful vision with low complication rates.

In addition to visual improvement, Dr. Sponsel often uses cataract surgery as a highly effective, lower risk method to remove thick lenses that cause a condition known as phacomorphic glaucoma. This condition occurs when the thick cataract presses forward and causes the drainage angle in the eye to become narrow or close, often resulting in high intraocular pressure and optic nerve damage. Removal of the cataract and replacing it with the thin, artificial lens alleviates this condition

Should you have an appointment you will be asked to call the office and stay in your vehicle/outside until our patient coordinator calls you to enter for your appointment. They will meet you at the suite, you will be required to fill out a questionnaire about any current medical symptoms so that we do not expose other patients and staff.

We will take your temperature upon entering, if you have a fever, cough, or experiencing any flu-like symptoms the urgency of your appointment will be reassessed by Dr. Sponsel to determine whether or not you will be seen at that time or re-scheduled.
